Why is Big Data the Apt Career Choice
There is this old fable of the woodcutter felling trees and getting paid by the number of trees that he chopped. But as the number of trees that he chopped dwindled, he presumed that it was because he was getting old and was physically incapable of cutting more trees. When he did go to his owner to plead his case, he was rather taken aback when his owner asked him when was it last that the woodcutter had sharpened his axe and he replied that he had been so occupied with cutting trees that it had not occurred to him that it was time that he had sharpened his axe.
Now perhaps a similar analogy could be applied metaphorically to the ‘axe’ called technology today and continually keep ‘sharpening’ or should we say ‘upgrading’ it t so that we are in a constant state of progress.
Is Upgrading Technology the Solution
All the hullabaloo surrounding data these days is not only that but the realization of the fact that we are now living in a world which has got everything to do with Big Data and its management and the amount of data that is multiplying on an everyday basis makes it Imperative for us to accept the rather apparent fact that in the new age science it would ONLY be Big Data that would be the virtual answer to every question and managing large chunks of data is where the heart of the matter would be.
It is precisely by applying Big Data that top notch companies like Facebook and Twitter have entered the niche league of companies. Today, most companies or for that matter all companies be they start-ups or large MNC’s, health care entities, Media or Finance or Social Media companies, have collectively realized the imperativeness of accepting Big Data into their companies and the advantages of allocating time in it, the effect of which is obviously visible in the form of a career upsurge both in terms of job roles and job titles as well.
Are you now ready to accept the Challenges
But the bigger question STILL remains whether companies are now willing to upskill their technologies to appreciate newer challenges. It is but a known fact that technology changes rapidly and continuously and a person still working on a Java 1.3 version, would have to upgrade his skills to the current versions quickly if they would have to stay afloat with the trend. Put simply, Big Data and Hadoop are synonymous and if the growing popularity of Hadoop is anything to reckon with, Hadoop, an open structure-Java based programming structure, is now currently ruling the roost in the market.
Now, the question that remains to be asked is whether it would be wise to for a Software Testing professional to hop on to the Hadoop band wagon per se. the answer would be in the affirmative as for Testing professionals, their job could get rather tedious with as they only end up ironing out bugs and improve the quality of the finished product on an everyday basis and training themselves on Big Data and Hadoop not only help them in upgrading their skills but also in creating better professional opportunities for them.
When we speak about professionals with a Mainframes background, the job would primarily involve them in managing large chunks of unstructured data which could get both laborious and monotonous not to mention it getting expensive as well. With Hadoop being an open source platform, it would not only be easier for them to manage huge volumes of data but create professional opportunities as well.
With regards to Data Warehousing professionals and the ETL developers, whose primary job is in handling as well as managing data on a regular basis, a training on Hadoop, would not only train them on managing large chunks of data more easily, but also open up a plethora of career opportunities for them.
Then there is also those who come from a Business Intelligence platform who need to store data at any given point of time. For firms like advertising agencies, the challenge of finding answers to recurring questions like? What routes people to a certain content, what is their profile like? How do we generate more people to an area? Analytical questions like these and more not only find their answers in Hadoop, but would also soar their career choices as well as chances.
Whatever be the nature of your professional expertise, it has now come to be an accepted norm that Big Data technologies are fast becoming an accepted accompaniment to enhance professional expertise to higher levels. Otherwise, we would remain like the fabled woodcutter in the story who had long forgotten to sharpen his axe!
